Since the lawn mower was invented in 1830, models have only become more complex and powerful. Innovation has led to the development of multiple different mower types. If you’re in the market for a lawn mower and would like an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the different mower types, this guide from Holder & Sons Equipment has more information.

Walk-Behind Mowers

The very first lawn mowers were walk-behind mowers, and besides motorizing the blades not much has really changed in all that time. While not as efficient as other lawn mower types, walk-behind mowers are very cheap and easy to maintain. If you only have an average-sized lawn to worry about, then a walk-behind mower is probably your best option. Some walk-behind mowers are self-propelled, meaning they require less effort to use, though these models are also more expensive.

Riding Mowers

For as great as walk-behind mowers are, using one to mow a huge lawn can take a lot of time and effort. Riding mowers, while expensive, are a lot more efficient and require less effort to use. Riding mowers are typically used by lawn care professionals, though they’re also useful if you own a large property and have a lot of grass to mow.

Zero-Turn Mowers

While riding mowers are certainly great for mowing huge, open lawns, they aren’t very good at cornering. If you have a lot of grass to mow and the yard is full of obstacles to maneuver around, then a zero-turn mower might be for you. These mowers are named for their zero-turn radius, which allows them to turn in place like a tank. Unfortunately, zero-turn mowers can be a bit expensive since they are more complex than your average lawn mower.

Stand-On Mower

Stand-on mowers are a type of riding mower in which the operator stands on a platform rather than riding on a seat. Some users prefer this configuration because they find it more ergonomic. Stand-on mowers also offer better visibility than your average riding mower and are fairly maneuverable.
